Nashik, Feb 22 (UNI) A 46-year-old woman died and 20 others were injured in an accident on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway in Chandwad taluka, Mumbai.
The accident occurred at Rahud ghat involved seven to eight vehicles on the Mumbai-Agra National Highway in Chandwad on Friday at around 10 pm. Rahud Ghat is located between Chandwad and Malegaon on the highway.
According to police, the brakes of a goods vehicle failed on the downhill road of the Rahud ghat. This goods vehicle overturned three vehicles and crashed multiple vehicles.
Chandwad Tehsildar Mandar Kulkarni informed that the accident took place at the ghat on Friday. The impact of the speeding goods vehicle was so strong that other vehicles were literally crushed to pieces.
The deceased woman, identified as Usha Deore (46, Malegaon), died on the spot in this accident. While 20 others from different vehicles were injured.
As soon as the information about the accident was received, the police rushed to the spot. The injured were sent to the rural hospital of Chandwad. After primary treatment, some were taken to private hospitals in Malegaon and elsewhere.
Due to the accident, traffic on both sides of the highway was disturbed for two hours. Eyewitnesses are estimating that the accident occurred due to the brake failure of the goods vehicle on the slope of the ghat. The goods vehicle, including the Eco and Swift cars, suffered major damage.
Police called the crane and ambulance. The injured person was admitted to Malegaon and Chandwad hospitals.
After two hours, the traffic on both sides was released step by step, the sources said.
