Tbilisi/New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI) Eleven Indian nationals employed at an Indian restaurant in Georgia have died due to suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, sources said on Monday.
The Indian Embassy in Georgia posted on its X account:
“Mission has just learned about the death of 12 Indian nationals in Gudauri, Georgia. Deepest condolences to the bereaved families. Mission is in touch with the local authorities to get details of the Indian nationals who lost their lives. All possible assistance will be given.”
However, it was later clarified that 11 Indians had died and one Georgian national.
Sources said that it seemed to be a case of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The 11 Indian nationals were employees of an Indian restaurant ‘Haveli’, in Gudauri, Georgia.
Local authorities are investigating, and an Embassy official is on site as well, the sources added.
The incident occurred in an Indian restaurant in Gudauri ski resort and claimed the lives of 11 foreign nationals and one Georgian citizen, Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) reported.
The MIA opened an investigation into the case under Article 116 of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
According to the preliminary information, a power generator was placed in an indoor space near the bedrooms, which was probably turned on yesterday (Sunday) after the electricity supply to the facility was cut off, it said.
Officers of the Criminal Police are present at the incident site. Experts will determine the exact cause of the incident victims’ death, the MIA said.
