13 people killed after boat capsizes in N. Zambia

Lusaka, Mar 26 (UNI) Thirteen people were killed and six others survived after a boat capsized in Zambia’s northern province of Luapula, local media reported on Tuesday.

The accident occurred in the Kawambwa District on Monday morning due to a heavy current in the Luena River as the victims, all sugar company workers, were going to work, Godfrey Chilambwe, commissioner of the district, was quoted as saying by the Times of Zambia.

According to him, preliminary reports indicate that the stick used to paddle the boat broke, forcing the victims to use their hands, but the boat capsized due to the strong current.

Only nine bodies have been recovered so far, he said, adding that divers have been dispatched to the scene to help retrieve the remaining bodies.
