BMHRC achieves first successful eye transplant
= Bringing new light to gas victim
Bhopal: The Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) has reached another significant milestone in the field of medicine. On Tuesday, the hospital successfully carried out its first-ever eye transplant. A 50-year-old gas victim from Raisen district received a corneal transplant, performed by a team of expert ophthalmologists from BMHRC’s Eye Department.
The patient had lost vision in one eye 15 years ago due to an injury, and the vision in the other eye had been severely impaired by cataracts. To restore his sight, the cornea donated by the late Mrs. Asha Sharma was used. Mrs. Sharma had donated her eyes on March 17 at a private hospital in Bhopal. Her cornea was brought to BMHRC on Sunday, and the transplant procedure was successfully completed on Tuesday. The patient is now fully recovered and regaining his vision.
The successful transplant was carried out by a dedicated team, including Dr. Hemlata Yadav, Head of the Eye Department, Professor Dr. Anjali Sharma, Visiting Consultant Dr. Prateek Gurjar, and other medical professionals.
Expressing her joy over this medical achievement, Dr. Manisha Srivastava, the acting director of BMHRC, stated, “We have long been working towards providing eye transplant services, and this is a significant accomplishment for us. We are also aiming to introduce other organ transplant services at BMHRC in the near future.”
