7.3-magnitude earthquake hits Chile

Santiago, July 19 (UNI) A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake has occurred near the port city of Antofagasta in northern Chile, data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has shown.

The earthquake initially had a magnitude of 6.8, but seismologists later elevated their estimate.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 43 kilometers (27 miles) southeast of the village of San Pedro de Atacama in the Antofagasta Region at a depth of 128 kilometers, seismologists say.

There are no immediate reports of casualties or material damage.
