Spl NDPS court in Shimla sentences man to 10 yrs RI

Shimla, Aug 24 (UNI) A special NDPS court here has convicted and sentenced a man to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for possessing the narcotic and psychotropic substances.

Public prosecutor Bhagwan Singh Negi told the court that an HRTC bus coming from Paonta was stopped for checking by police at Jhamrari on February 8, 2020.

While they were checking the bus, police called the conductor and driver of the bus near the seat of accused Sandeep Ghunta, who was carrying a bag between his legs on suspicion that he might be carrying some stolen articles or contraband.

On checking the bag of the accused, police recovered 13 sealed bottles of lykarex and four sealed bottles of coderex of 100 ML along with one weighing machine from him.

After the bus conductor told the police party that accused had also kept two bags in the luggage compartment of the bus at the time of boarding, police checked those bags and recovered total 77 bottles of 100 ml of codrex and lykarex of narcotic and psychotropic substance from accused Ghunta, which were wrapped in plastic polythene bags.

Following which, police arrested Ghunta and registered an offense under section 22 of NDPS Act.

After examining total 15 witnesses, the court of special Judge Shimla, Rajesh Chauhan, convicted Ghunta on 19 August 2023 and on Wednesday sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs one lakh fine on him and in default of payment of fine, he would undergo simple imprisonment for the period of three years, in addition to substantive sentence, it was told.
