New Delhi, (UNI) The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) on Monday directed Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water per day for the next 15 days to Tamil Nadu.
However, a final decision will be taken during a Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) tomorrow.
The CWRC directed Karnataka to release 5,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu after heated deliberations between both the parties. Before arriving on this decision, Karnataka objected to CWRC’s proposal to release 7,500 cusecs of water.
Tamil Nadu, on the other hand, demanded 24,000 cusecs of water per day for the next 10 days, but was rejected by the CWRC.
So far, Karnataka has been releasing 10,000 cusecs of water every day to Tamil Nadu. However, the BJP has been objecting to Siddaramaiah’s government to release water to Tamil Nadu, contending that Karnataka received far less rainfall this year.
Tamil Nadu has approached the Supreme Court seeking directions to Karnataka to release water. The apex court has directed the CWMA to submit a report on the quantum of water released by September 8.
