Chennai, Feb 1 (UNI) The Special General Council meeting of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) on Thursday authorised Party Founder Dr.S.Ramadoss to decide on finalising the alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.
A resolution to this effect was adopted at the meeting held here, which also said the dates for the elections, scheduled to be held in two months time, are likely to be announced by the end of this month.
It said the PMK has decided to face the polls by forging alliances with parties that has concern and welfare of the State and the country.
“The meeting authorises Dr Ramadoss to decide with which party it has to align to face the polls”, it said.
The PMK faced the 2019 Lok Sabha polls as part of the BJP-led NDA alliance that consisted of AIADMK, BJP, DMDK, Tamil Maanila Congress and Puthiya Tamizhagam.
The front faced a severe drubbing, with the AIADMK alone winning a solitary seat (Theni Constituency).
The PMK had contested seven seats under the alliance and drew a blank.
The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance secured a resounding victory winning 39 of the total 40 seats (39 in Tamil Nadu and the lone seat in the Union Territory of Puducherry) with Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, MDMK, IUML, IJK and KMDK as its alliance partners.
In the 2021 Assembly polls also PMK faced it as an ally of the AIADMK and won a mere five of theĀ 23 seats it had contested. PMK later quit the AIADMK-led alliance.
It was again the DMK-led Front that swept the polls winning 159 of the total 234 seats in the State, riding on the anti-incumbency factor and the DMK formed the government after a gap of ten years and MR M.K.Stalin became the Chief Minister for the first time.
The DMK-led SPA amassed 159 seats, with the DMK alone winning in 133 constituencies (173 contested), securing an absolute majority for the first time in 25 years. The BJP-led NDA won 75 seats, including 66 by the AIADMK.
