Bengaluru, Mar 11 (UNI) Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara alleged on Monday that the CAA notification is politically motivated and is intended to reap electoral gains.
He also said that there is a perception that the BJP might be apprehensive about their electoral prospects, despite their outward assertions of confidence in winning.
“Somewhere, the BJP has a fear. Despite their claiming outside that they will win, it seems they have less confidence about winning more seats and coming to power. So they are making such decisions,” he added.
Dr. Parameshwara emphasised the need to thoroughly examine the complete details before forming an opinion on the norms of CAA and also referenced opposition to it in 2019, indicating that past controversies surrounding the legislation warrant careful consideration of the current decision by the central government.
“Today, CAA guidelines and norms have been gazetted and published. I feel that it is not proper to comment without seeing its complete details. We have seen in 2019 that it was opposed by many. Despite that the central government has come to this decision, it has to be examined and looked into,” he said.
The central government today announced the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, a move that comes four years after the law was passed and paves the way for citizenship for the persecuted non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
The rules were notified days ahead of the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections.
With this, the Modi government will now start granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants—Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians—from the three neighbouring countries.
