Srinagar, April 24 (UNI) Two soldiers were wounded in a brief gunfight in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, official sources said.
The sources said a massive combing operation is underway in the Renji forest area of Aragam, Bandipora to trace the militants who exchanged fire with the security forces in the wee hours.
” In the initial exchange of fire, two soldiers were injured and their condition is stated to be stable,” sources said.
The sources added that helicopters and drones have been pressed into service since this morning for conducting aerial surveillance to prevent the militants from fleeing the area.
The Army said a joint operation was launched on Sunday based on specific intelligence by agencies regarding the presence of terrorists in the area.
“Based on specific intelligence by agencies regarding presence of terrorists, a Joint Operation was launched from 21 Apr onwards by #IndianArmy & @JmuKmrPolice in general area Mulkhyama Forest, Bandipore. The area was cordoned & search conducted, resulting in a fire fight in early hours this morning,” Army’s Srinagar based Chinar Corps posted on X.
It added that the operation is in progress.
This month there have been two gun battles in the Kashmir region, which is gearing up for the Lok Sabha polls in three phases.
Two unidentified militants were killed on April 5, as the Army foiled an infiltration bid in the Uri sector of Baramulla district . Six days later a local militant of Lashkar-e-Taiba was killed in an encounter at Frassipora Pulwama.
