Bengaluru, July 16 (UNI) The Karnataka Assembly witnessed high drama as senior JDS legislator HD Revanna openly challenged the credibility of Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Mohan during a heated session on Tuesday.
Revanna, whose son Prajwal Revanna, the former Hassan MP, is embroiled in a high-profile sexual abuse scandal, did not mince words as he launched a scathing attack on the state’s top cop.
“I have served as a lawmaker for 25 years and have dedicated 40 years to public service. Now, a woman is brought to the Director-General’s office to file a complaint against me. Isn’t the DG nalayak for orchestrating this? He’s unfit for his position. This government is shameless,” Revanna lashed out, making his first appearance in the Assembly since the scandal broke.
The comments caused an uproar among the ruling Congress members, prompting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to request Deputy Speaker Ramappa Lamani to expunge Revanna’s remarks from the official record.
Revanna, who was arrested on May 4 in connection with a kidnapping and illegal confinement case linked to the broader Hassan sexual abuse scandal, asserted his family’s innocence but demanded the harshest punishment for his son if proven guilty.
“If my son is guilty of these crimes, then he deserves the harshest punishment, even the death penalty. I won’t oppose it,” he declared.
The session’s intensity heightened as Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka criticised the handling of the Hassan case by the Special Investigation Teams (SITs), drawing a comparison with the investigation into the embezzlement at the Maharshi Valmiki ST Development Corporation.
“Revanna, Bhavani, and our former Hassan MLA Preetham are all facing an SIT investigation. This SIT is so thorough that they had to go to court seeking justice, fearing arrest,” Ashoka remarked. “But with the other SIT, there’s no such fear,” he added, highlighting that former minister B Nagendra was not even summoned for investigation for over 30 days.
Senior BJP lawmaker S Suresh Kumar further escalated the controversy by stating, “There’s SIT and then there’s SSIT. The SIT stands for Special Investigation Team, while the SSIT is the Siddaramaiah Shivakumar Investigation Team.”
Taking exception to Kumar’s remarks, Congress leader Shivakumar demanded that they be expunged from the record.
