Srinagar, July 17 (UNI) The tenth day of Muharram, youm-e- Ashura, passed off peacefully on Wednesday amid foolproof security arrangements in place, officials said.
Shia mourners took out “Zuljanah” procession in many areas of Kashmir including Srinagar to mark the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Thousands of mourners participated in the ‘zuljanah’ procession in Srinagar and Budgam district.
In Srinagar, the procession was taken out from the Zadibal area in downtown to Lal Bazar with thousands of Shia Muslims participating in the procession.
Attired in black clothes, men, women and children were seen beating their chests and chanting religious hymns.
The authorities had made elaborate arrangements including security, water and health facilities were made available at various places on the route from Zadibal to Lal Bazar.
There was heavy deployment of forces in Srinagar and Budgam to ensure peaceful culmination of the processions.
Divisional commissioner of Kashmir Vijay Kumar Bidhuri and senior Police and security officials also accompanied the procession at Zadibal and took stock of the arrangements.
Reports of peaceful culmination of the Ashura processions were also received from other parts of the valley.
Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha recalled the sacrifices made by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) on the eve of Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram.
In a message, the Lt Governor said, “The occasion reminds humanity of the sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his great teachings. It is also a day to rededicate ourselves to the ideals of equality, brotherhood, compassion and justice as epitomised by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS).
On this day, let all of us resolve to work together to build a peaceful, just and equitable society”.
