New Delhi, July 31 (UNI) Days after the deaths of three UPSC aspirants due to flooding in the basement of a coaching centre in Old Rajinder Nagar, the Delhi government on Wednesday announced that it will introduce a law to regulate coaching institutes.
Alleging that the central government has failed to introduce any regulation despite several irregularities by coaching centres, Delhi Minister Atishi said, “The Delhi government will bring a law to regulate all coaching institutes in the city. This law will address infrastructure, teacher qualifications, fees, and misleading advertisements.”
In a joint press conference with Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, Atishi said, “A committee will be formed today to formulate the Coaching Institute Regulations Act. It will include Delhi government officials and students preparing for different papers.”
She also provided an email address http://coaching.law .feedback@gmail.com to collect feedback from students and the public on this law. Everyone can give their feedback on this, Atishi said.
“I received an internal investigation report on July 29. It revealed that the drain that was responsible for the waterlogging in that area was encroached upon by several coaching institutes there. The other reason was that coaching institutes were running classes and libraries in the basement. This was absolutely wrong,” Atishi said.
The basement can only be used for parking and stores. After this report, MCD fired the Junior Engineer (JE) from the job. Along with this, the Assistant Engineer (AE) has been suspended, Atishi added.
After the tragic incident in Rajendra Nagar, I directed the MCD Commissioner to take action against the illegal coaching centres and the officials responsible for this incident. Along with this, many coaching centres which were running classes and libraries in the basement have been given notice and their basements will be sealed from today, Atishi asserted.
In the last three days, basements of 30 coaching centres in Rajendra Nagar, Mukherjee Nagar, Preet Vihar and Laxmi Nagar have been sealed. Apart from this, notices have been issued to 200 other coaching centres. The work of sealing the basement will continue today as well, Atishi informed.
