Wayanad, Aug 1 (UNI) The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday visited the landslide-hit areas of Wayanad in Kerala along with his sister and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and termed the tragedy a “national disaster” a
“To me, this is a national disaster for sure. It is a tragedy For Wayanad, Kerala, and the nation,” he said while talking to the media after visiting the affected region.
They also toured the relief camps and hospitals at Meppadi in Wayanad.
Rahul Gandhi said, “It is quite a painful experience to see how many people have lost their families and houses in the Wayanad landslide. The survivors should be relocated. Let us see what the government says.”
He also said, “We should stand along with the people of Wayanad”.
Gandhi said he would try to help and make sure that the survivors get what is due. He said many of the survivers wanted to relocate.
To a question, he said it was not the time to speak about political issues; “I am not interested in politics right now, but protection of the people is a priority to me.”
Priyanka Gandhi said the extent of suffering of the people of Wayanad was “unimaginable”.
The Gandhi sibings landed at Kannur International Airport around 9 am and reached Wayanad by road at 2 pm.
Both of them will camp at Wayanad today and leave for New Delhi tomorrow, party sources said.
