Axelsen’s comeback dashes Lakshya Sen’s gold hopes

Paris, Aug 4 (UNI) Lakshya Sen seemed poised for a historic win, leading 15-9 in the first game and holding a 7-0 advantage in the second. Yet, these significant leads were not enough to secure victory, as Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen executed a stunning comeback to win the men’s singles semi-final with scores of 20-22 and 14-21.

Sen’s early dominance quickly faded as Axelsen showcased exceptional resilience and strategic skill, overturning both deficits to clinch the win. The defeat was a crushing blow for Sen, who had hoped to advance to the gold medal match and fulfill the high expectations placed on him.

Despite this setback, Sen’s journey is not over. He now faces Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match scheduled for tomorrow. This match presents Sen with a final opportunity to secure India’s first-ever men’s singles badminton medal at the Olympics and to salvage a challenging campaign.

As the nation watches with hopeful anticipation, all eyes will be on Sen to see if he can harness his resolve and deliver a performance worthy of his talent. Tomorrow’s clash could still end on a triumphant note, providing a silver lining to an otherwise disheartening day.
