Paris, Aug 7 (UNI) The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on Wednesday filed an appeal to United World Wrestling (UWW) to reconsider Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Olympic Games Women’s Wrestling 50kg class competition.
“The Wrestling Federation of India has filed an appeal to UWW to reconsider the decision to disqualify Vinesh, and the IOA is following that up in the strongest possible manner,” said Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Dr. PT Usha in a statement.
Expressing her deep disappointment and concern over the decision, Dr. Usha stated, “I met Vinesh at the Olympic Village Polyclinic a short while ago and assured her of the complete support of the Indian Olympic Association, the Government of India, and the entire country. We are providing Vinesh all the medical and emotional support she needs.”
She also praised Vinesh’s relentless efforts, as well as the dedication of the medical team led by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and Chef-de-Mission Gagan Narang, who worked tirelessly to ensure Vinesh could compete.
“The IOA is taking every step to maintain the morale of our contingent. We are confident that all Indians will stand with Vinesh and the entire Indian team,” Dr. Usha affirmed.
Dr. Pardiwala explained the complexities involved in managing a wrestler’s weight. “Wrestlers often compete in weight categories lower than their natural weight, giving them an edge over less strong opponents. The process of weight cutting involves restricted food and water intake, combined with intense exercise and sauna sessions until the weigh-in.”
Dr. Pardiwala highlighted the delicate balance needed to restore energy post weigh-in, involving limited water and high-energy foods. “Vinesh’s nutritionist had calculated this to be 1.5 kg. There can also be a rebound weight gain after competition.”
Despite careful management, Vinesh’s weight increased slightly after her three bouts, leading to dehydration concerns. Her coach employed standard weight-cut techniques, confident they would be effective. However, Vinesh was found to be 100 grams over the 50 kg limit, resulting in her disqualification. All drastic measures, including cutting her hair, were unsuccessful in meeting the required weight.
As a precaution, Vinesh was administered IV fluids post-disqualification to prevent dehydration, and blood tests are being conducted to ensure her well-being. “All of Vinesh’s parameters were normal throughout this process, and she feels perfectly well,” Dr. Pardiwala confirmed.
Vinesh, in her interaction with Dr. PT Usha, expressed her disappointment over the disqualification but assured that she is physically and medically fine.
