- Handloom Fortnight is being celebrated from 7 to 15 August
Bhopal: National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) celebrated ‘Handloom Day’ with great pomp and show at Bhopal. Dr. Kailash M. Rao, Director, School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), Bhopal, who was the Chief Guest, inaugurated the event. Addressing the function, Dr. Rao emphasized the need to preserve and promote the tradition of Indian textiles and crafts. He praised such events as an important step to promote Indian culture and handicrafts.
NIFT Bhopal is celebrating “Handloom Fortnight” from 7th August to 15th August, which will showcase the tradition and beauty of handloom crafts. The rich heritage of Indian crafts and textiles was showcased on this occasion. A special exhibition of products made by NIFT students was organized in the program, which were prepared under the guidance of the faculty. The exhibition gave a glimpse of various handicraft clusters and showcased the diversity of Indian textile art.
Artisans set up stalls on the occasion of Handloom Day
Studio Nui, Sanjana’s Aipan (Traditional Art of Uttarakhand), Silk Dupatta and Saree, Kabira Khadi, Shalini Garg’s Knits and Crochet, Tanisha Dubey’s Beads Jewellery and Mahashakti Seva Kendra. The event was aimed at promoting handicrafts and encouraging local artists.
Textile Design student Parul Dwivedi – Textile Design-V and other students shared their experiences at the Banaras Craft Resource Development (CRD) programme where they gained first-hand knowledge about traditional weaving techniques and their applications in modern fashion.
Mahashakti Seva Kendra is a women-run NGO dedicated to supporting the victims of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy. Their products included iPad covers, bags, rakhis, tote bags etc. made from waste fabric.
The highlight of the celebration was the Handloom Styling competition for faculty and students. The aim of the competition was to promote the importance of handloom in contemporary fashion, encouraging participants to integrate traditional techniques with modern design sensibilities. The event was aimed at promoting handicrafts and encouraging local artists. The event attendees appreciated the handicrafts and pledged to support the local artists.
