Bangladesh: Yunus shunts out Home Advisor Sakhawat Hussain

Dhaka, (UNI) Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus-led Interim Government on Friday shunted out Home Advisor Brigadier General (retd) Sakhawat Hussain in the first reshuffle of the Advisory Council and appointed Lt General (retd) Jahangir Alam Choudhury to the key post.

Sakhawat Hussain was given the comparatively lightweight Jute and Textile Ministry.

Jahangir Alam Choudhury was among four Advisers sworn in during the day.

Sakhawat Hussain had stirred up several controversies during his brief tenure as Home Adviser.

He openly described the erstwhile rulers Awami League as the country’s main party and said “I have lot of respect for its contribution”. He also advised the Awami League to reorganise itself and contest the elections.

His remarks created a flutter and student leaders who led the violent rebellion that caused the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government earlier this month publicly expressed their disapproval.

Sakhawat Hussain stoked further controversies when he threatened to close down television channels engaging in flattery and said the politics of the country had become “politics of flattery:.

Meanwhile, the reshuffle saw seven advisers being assigned extra responsibilities.

Of the seven, the ministries of labour and employment and information and broadcasting were entrusted to Nahid Islam and Asif Mahmud, two important organisers of the student movement that brought down the previous government, respectively, The Daily Star reported.
