- Amazing feat of AIIMS doctors, transcatheter procedure adopted for the second time in India
Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal
Doctors of AIIMS Bhopal have succeeded in stopping the leakage of a heart valve of an 18-year-old youth without surgery through transcatheter procedure. By adopting this procedure for the second time in India, the patient has been saved from surgery, whereas this youth was advised by some outside hospitals to undergo surgery to replace the valve.
Recently, an 18-year-old youth reached the Cardiology OPD of AIIMS Bhopal with complaints of fatigue and shortness of breath. Here senior cardiologist Dr. Bhushan Shah conducted a thorough examination of the patient, in which it was found that the leakage was happening from the outer part of the valve, which is rare and is treated with surgery.
However, keeping in mind the young age of the patient, Dr. Bhushan Shah decided to stop the leakage without surgery. He was treated using the Nitinol device. Through this minimally invasive procedure, Dr. Shah and Dr. Ashish Jain along with anesthesia specialist Dr. Harish Kumar and his team successfully closed the valve leakage through the transcatheter method with the help of 3rd shunt. The patient was discharged from the hospital the very next day and is now completely healthy.
This procedure is a testimony to the expertise and dedication of our cardiac team. This is the second time such a procedure has been done in India. By avoiding surgery, we have significantly improved the quality of life of this young patient.
