Patient suffering from liver cirrhosis treated at BMHRC through TIPS procedure

  • Was suffering from the problem of water filling in the stomach and vomiting blood

Bhopal: BMHRC has successfully treated a 43-year-old gas-stricken patient suffering from a disease called portal hypertension through the radiology intervention procedure TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt). The patient had developed this disease due to liver cirrhosis, due to which his stomach was repeatedly filled with water and he vomited blood. In this procedure, the patient was treated free of cost, whereas in private hospitals it costs up to Rs 4 to 5 lakh. The patient was treated by a team comprising of Dr. Radheshyam Meena, Interventional Radiologist, Dept of Radiology, BMHRC, Dr. Aman Kumar, Associate Professor, Dept of Radiology, AIIMS Bhopal, Dr. Tripti Mishra, Visiting Consultant, Dept of Gastro Medicine, BMHRC and Dr. Kanika Suhag, Associate Professor, Dept of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Meena said that the patient was suffering from liver cirrhosis for the past several years. His liver had shrunk and hardened, due to which the liver’s ability to flow blood was greatly reduced. Due to this, the portal vein carrying blood to the liver started getting pressurized and the blood reached other veins, due to which blood started getting vomited and the stomach started filling with water. This condition is called portal hypertension.

Dr. Meena said that another vein is also connected to the liver, which is called hepatic vein. The hepatic vein carries the cleaned blood from the liver to the heart, but due to the liver not functioning properly, this process was also getting affected. Through the TIPS procedure, a stent was implanted between the portal vein and the hepatic vein, which improved blood flow. Dr. Meena said that the patient has now got relief from the problem of vomiting blood and water accumulation in the stomach.

Dr Manisha Shrivastava, Director-in-Charge, BMHRC, Bhopal said advanced procedures like interventional radiology offer patients the benefit of lower risk, less pain and faster recovery. At BMHRC, we are constantly striving to provide such advanced treatments. This surgery is a good example of collaboration, where experts from two institutions came together.
