London, Oct 29 (UNI) Premier League giants Manchester United have parted ways with manager Erik ten Hag following a disappointing start to the season.
Ten Hag, who joined the club in May 2022, departs after United’s 2-1 loss to West Ham United on Sunday, which left them languishing in 14th position on the league table. This marks United’s worst opening to a season in 35 years, with only three wins from their first nine games.
Ten Hag’s dismissal comes despite some success during his tenure, including an EFL Cup victory in 2022-23 and an FA Cup title in the 2023-24 season. However, a string of underwhelming performances in both the Premier League and European competitions saw the Dutchman face mounting criticism, particularly in light of the high-profile signings that failed to make an impact.
Former United striker and Ten Hag’s assistant, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has been named interim manager. Van Nistelrooy, a club legend with 150 goals in 219 appearances from 2001 to 2006, is expected to stabilise the team as United search for a new permanent manager.
The sacking of Ten Hag sees United looking for their sixth full-time manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, underscoring a tumultuous period for the club in their bid to recapture former glories.
