Mumbai, Nov 5 (UNI) Erasing heavy losses, the BSE Sensex on Tuesday surged 694.39 pts to close at 79,476.63 on the strength of Metal, Commodities, and oil and gas stocks amid uncertainty about the US Presidential elections.
The National Stock Exchange (NSE) gained 217.95 pts at 24,213.30.
The Nifty registered days high and low at 24,229.05 and 23,842.75 pts respectively.
The Sensex opened in red only at 78,542.16, sliding 240 pts. It further lost ground by 486 pts at 78,296.70, a days low.
In late trade, it erased earlier losses and rallied 741 pts at 79,523.13, a day high, before closing at 79,476.63, up 694.39 pts from its previous close.
The stocks that lifted the market were Metal by 2.38 pc, Commodities by 1.89 pc, Financial services by 1.58 pc, and oil and gas by 1.08 pc.
The Mid-cap rose by 0.48 pc and Small-cap by 0.41 pc.
In 30 scrips, 21 advanced, while 9 declined.
The gainers were JSW Steel by 4.73 pc to Rs 1000, Tata Steel by 3.64 pc to Rs 152.30, Axis Bank by 2.63 pc to Rs 1170, IndusInd Bank by 2.49 pc to Rs 1090 and HDFC Bank by 2.56 pc to Rs 1757.95.
The losers were Adani Ports by 1.46 pc to Rs 1329.25, ITC by 0.96 pc to Rs 480.05, Bharti Airtel by 0.80 pc to Rs 1578.85 and Asian paints by 0.79 pc to Rs 2892.
