Rio de Janeiro/New Delhi, Nov 18 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Monday warmly welcomed to the G20 Summit venue in Rio de Janeiro by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
As PM Modi arrived at the venue, President Lula da Silva shook hands with him. The two leaders then exchanged a warm embrace, before PM Modi proceeded inside.
In a post on X, PM Modi said:
“Looking forward to the proceedings at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Thankful to President Lula for the warm welcome.”
He also met the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the venue.
“Met UN Secretary General Mr. António Guterres at the Rio G20 Summit.”
The 19th G20 Summit is being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from November 18-19.
The Summit will commence today with the launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger & Poverty during the inaugural session, as a flagship outcome of the Brazilian G20 Presidency.
This will be followed by three plenary sessions over the course of two days, aligned with the priorities identified by the Brazilian Presidency. The themes of the three sessions are: (i) Social Inclusion and the Fight against Hunger and Poverty; (ii) Reform of Institutions of Global Governance; and, (iii) Sustainable development and Energy Transition.
The G20 Summit will conclude with Brazil handing-over the G20 Presidency to South Africa.
South Africa will formally assume the G20 Presidency from December 1, 2024.
Brazil took over the baton of G20 Presidency from India on December 1, 2023.
The Brazilian Presidency has identified three priorities under the overarching theme of ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet’, which are:
*Social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty;
*Energy transitions and the promotion of sustainable development in its economic, social, and environmental dimensions; and
*Reform of global governance institutions.
