New Delhi, Nov 19 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Atishi on Tuesday inspected the new driverless metro train under Phase-IV at the Mukundpur Depot and highlighted that in just 10 years, the AAP government has laid 200 km of new metro lines and built 145 new stations.
Addressing the media, Atishi also emphasised, “In addition to the expansion of metro infrastructure in the last 10 years, the number of passengers has also grown. In 2014, 24 lakh people traveled by metro daily, but by 2024, this number has risen to over 60 lakh. On November 18, 2024, a record was set with 78 lakh passengers using the metro.”
“Under Phase-IV, the new driverless metro train has arrived. This train is world-class, driverless, and will be deployed on the ground in 3-4 months,” the CM said, emphasizing that since the AAP government came to power in Delhi 10 years ago, the pace of metro expansion has increased by 1.5 times.
She also mentioned that work on Metro Phase-IV is currently ongoing, covering 86 kilometers. Three lines under Phase-IV are under construction, including Janakpuri West to RK Ashram, Majlis Park to Maujpur, and Aerocity to Tughlakabad. The Lajpat Nagar to Saket and Indraprastha to Inderlok lines will also be included soon, with work on these lines set to begin shortly.
“Metro work started in Delhi in 1998, and by 2014, only 193 km of lines had been laid, with 143 stations. But after the AAP government took charge, metro expansion in the last 10 years has surpassed the expansion achieved from 1998 to 2014,” Atishi said.
“Between 2014 and 2024, 200 kilometers of new metro lines have been constructed, and 145 new stations have been added. Today, Delhi Metro has 288 stations, and 11 metro lines connect different parts of Delhi as well as several areas in the NCR region,” she noted.
“The expansion of the metro network has also contributed to the economic growth of Delhi. It reduces travel time for people and helps in reducing pollution. Delhi Metro has reduced 630,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and it is regarded globally as a public transport system that helps mitigate pollution,” the Chief Minister said.
“In the last 10 years, under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi government has played a major role in providing excellent public infrastructure, including the expansion of the metro. In the coming years, the Phase-IV metro network will include advanced driverless trains,” Atishi underlined.
“This is a moment of pride for Delhi. The first six-coach metro train under Phase-IV has arrived at the Mukundpur Depot. Today, I had the chance to inspect this state-of-the-art driverless train, which will soon be part of the Magenta Line. This once again proves that Delhi Metro is the only metro system in India using driverless technology.
With Arvind Kejriwal’s vision, Delhi Metro is rapidly expanding, and this achievement takes us one step closer to building a smarter, larger metro network in Delhi,” Atishi tweeted.
Meanwhile, AAP national Convenor Arvind Kejriwal also posted on X, “Metro is Delhi’s lifeline. In the last 10 years, many areas have been connected to the metro, and under Phase IV, new areas will be connected soon. I congratulate the Delhi government and all Delhiites for this remarkable achievement.”
