Washington, Dec 18 (UNI) The US is assessing security issues before sending a delegation to Syria for talks with current authorities, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Friday.
“There is no prohibition. We continue to look at when the right time may be to get American personnel into Syria. But when we do that, we have to make sure that we can do it in a secure way… We are working through security issues and other considerations,” Miller told a briefing.
He also said that the security of US diplomats is one of Washington’s priorities.
Syria’s armed opposition captured Damascus on December 8. Russian officials have said that Bashar Assad stepped down as president after negotiations with participants in the Syrian conflict and left Syria for Russia, where he was granted asylum.
Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran an Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister. He later announced that an interim government had been formed and would remain in place until March 2025.
