Presidential Election to be held in Ecuador on Sunday

Quito, Feb 9 (UNI) Ecuadorans will head to the polls on Sunday to elect their next president for a four-year term.

Incumbent President Daniel Noboa is running for re-election after having assumed office just a little over a year ago following the dissolution of parliament amid the political crisis in May 2023. Left-wing lawmaker Luisa Gonzalez, who faced Noboa in the 2023 run-off, is considered his main contender.

Other candidates include right-wing businessman Jan Topic, who also ran in 2023, the president of the country’s Indigenous confederation Leonidas Iza and Andrea Gonzalez, the former running mate of another 2023 candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who was shot and killed after an election campaign event.

Should none of the candidates secure a clear majority this time, the run-off will be held on April 13.
