Srinagar, Feb 21 (UNI) The Peoples Democratic Party on Friday said that it will launch a signature campaign to demand an alcohol ban.
The signature campaign will be launched by party leader and Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija Mufti on Saturday in Srinagar.
“Alcohol & drugs are wrecking lives & families in J&K. We must come together to put an end to it before it’s too late. Join me for a signature campaign tomorrow at the PDP office Srinagar between 11 AM – 2 PM for an alcohol ban to garner support for the PDP bill on banning alcohol consumption,” Iltija posted on X.
The signature campaign comes at a time when legislators from the ruling National Conference (NC) and PDP have submitted private members’ bills separately in the J&K Assembly seeking a ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol.
The bills will be tabled in the upcoming budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly that begins on March 3.
Last week, a controversy erupted after NC chief spokesman Tanvir Sadiq suggested examining the impact of a liquor ban on tourism. Following outrage, Sadiq asserted that his statement had been misinterpreted.
“Alcohol and drug addiction need to be weeded out of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
