Bhubaneswar, Feb 28 (UNI) Veteran Odia actor Uttam Mohanty, who dominated the Odia film industry for decades, passed away while undergoing treatment for liver cirrhosis at a private hospital in Gurugram late Thursday night.
He was 67.
Mohanty, a household name in Odisha, had an illustrious career in both Indian films and television, with over 135 Odia films to his credit. He had also acted in nearly 30 Bengali films.
Born in Baripada, Mohanty earned a Bachelor of Science degree. During his college days, he developed a strong inclination toward acting.
After completing his graduation, he moved to Ludhiana to pursue chartered accountancy. Later, he stayed with his elder brother, the late Arun Ku. Mohanty, in Kolkata for some time before eventually entering the film industry.
His film career began with Sadhu Meher’s directorial venture Abhiman, after which he quickly established himself in Ollywood. He then starred in Pati Patni, followed by Nijhum Ratira Sathi, Chinha Achhinha, Ramayana, Tapasya, and Ram Balram.
Mohanty formed successful on-screen pairs with many leading actresses, including Rita Chand, Sujata Ananda, Tandra Roy, Mahasweta Ray, Deepa Sahu, Subhra Pati, Aparajita, Baisali, Sangeeta Das, and even non-Odia actresses like Rachana Banerjee.
Often hailed as a “one-man industry,” Uttam Mohanty dominated Odia cinema for three decades, excelling in various roles—romantic lead, village lad, and character roles. His films Abhiman, Danda Balunga, and Bhakta Salabega are still remembered today for his remarkable performances.
Mohanty acted in over 50 films alongside Aparajita Mohanty, whom he married in 1987. He also appeared in Hindi serials like Palash and the Bengali serial Bideshini Bohu. Additionally, he contributed to music albums and devotional songs.
He received numerous Odia Filmfare awards and accolades for his performances, and several societies and institutions honored him as a living legend of Ollywood cinema.
His son, Babushan Mohanty, is also a popular Odia actor with over 50 Odia films to his credit.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep condolences on the demise of the distinguished actor.
In his condolence message, Majhi described Mohanty as a “shining star” and the “undisputed hero” of Odia cinema for over two decades.
He stated that Mohanty was an icon who elevated Odia cinema to new heights by acting in Odia, Bengali, and even Hindi films. “His demise is an irreparable loss to the Odia art world,” Majhi said, extending his sympathies to the bereaved family.
The Chief Minister also announced that Mohanty’s last rites will be performed with full state honors.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also mourned the loss of the legendary actor, stating, “Odisha has lost a yuga janma” (a once-in-a-generation talent).
Pradhan further added, “I am deeply saddened and heartbroken by the passing of Uttam Mohanty, the eternal hero of Odia cinema.
He was not just an artist but a member of my extended family. His flawless and vibrant acting made him a beloved figure across Odisha,the Union Minister said adding that his passing has created a void in the Odia film industry.”
