Mother sentenced to life imprisonment

  • Killed her one-month-old daughter brutally

Bhopal – On Thursday, in a landmark judgment, the Honorable Atul Saxena, 23rd Additional Sessions Judge, sentenced Sarita Mewada, a mother who brutally killed her one-month-old daughter, to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1,000 under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The case was presented by Special Public Prosecutor Mrs. Sudha Vijay Singh Bhadoria.

Case Summary: Mrs. Bhadoria, the Special Public Prosecutor, explained that on September 16, 2020, around 11:00 AM, Sarita Mewada informed others that her baby, Kinjal, was missing from the cot where she had left her. After a search, Kinjal’s body was found in a water tank inside the house around 4:00 PM. Sarita, who was the only person in the room at that time, later confessed to her husband, Sachin Mewada, that she had drowned Kinjal in the tank and sealed it shut. Sarita admitted that she had wanted a son, not a daughter, and felt resentment toward Kinjal.

Based on this confession and collected evidence, the police registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC. During the investigation, the prosecution presented circumstantial evidence and the testimony of Kinjal’s last moments with her mother, leading to Sarita’s conviction.

The court, agreeing with the prosecution’s evidence, sentenced Sarita to life imprisonment and imposed a fine. The court also reflected on the cultural significance of daughters, quoting Rabindranath Tagore, stating that a daughter’s birth is proof that God is not displeased with humanity.
