Bhopal: In a major initiative to address Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM), AIIMS Bhopal, under the leadership of Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, has established a Center of Excellence in collaboration with the National Health Mission-Madhya Pradesh (NHM-MP) and UNICEF. This center aims to provide advanced medical care for critically ill children suffering from SAM, particularly those who are non-responsive to treatment.
The center houses the Severe Malnutrition Advanced Referral and Treatment (SMART) Unit, dedicated to managing severe cases. It focuses on providing high-level technical support, conducting research, and offering training programs on effective SAM management.
To further enhance the skills of healthcare workers, the state government recently organized a two-day F-SAM training program for Feeding Demonstrators and ANMs/Staff Nurses from Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers (NRCs). On March 4, participants visited the Center of Excellence, where they received hands-on training in malnutrition management, including diet preparation, anthropometric assessment, and identifying danger signs in children.
Dr. Bhavana Dhingra, Nodal Officer of the Center of Excellence, stressed the importance of early identification and structured treatment protocols. Prof. Singh underscored the significance of this initiative, emphasizing AIIMS Bhopal’s commitment to saving lives and supporting the government’s mission to eradicate malnutrition.
