New Delhi, Mar 10 (UNI) The Union government on Monday appointed justice Joymalya Bagchi as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The announcement was made by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on social media platform X.
The Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, Justice Bhushan R Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Abhay S Oka, and Justice Vikram Nath, recommended his appointment on March 6.
The selection process considered his judicial acumen, integrity, and experience, along with factors such as seniority and regional representation.
Justice Bagchi, who began his tenure as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in June 2011, has had an extensive judicial career. He was transferred to the Andhra Pradesh High Court in January 2021 and later returned to the Calcutta High Court in November 2021.
His appointment to the Supreme Court fills one of the two existing vacancies in the apex court, which has a sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
With his elevation, Justice Bagchi is set to assume the Chief Justice of India (CJI) role in May 2031, holding the position for a brief tenure until his retirement on October 2, 2031.
Throughout his judicial career spanning over 13 years, Justice Bagchi has gained extensive expertise across various domains of law, making significant contributions to the judiciary.
