Bhopal: In a groundbreaking achievement, AIIMS Bhopal has successfully conducted Madhya Pradesh’s first-ever government-sector Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI). Led by Executive Director Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh, this historic procedure was carried out by Dr. Bhushan Shah, Assistant Professor in Cardiology, and Dr. Yogesh Niwariya, Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery.
TAVI is a minimally invasive heart valve replacement technique that provides a viable alternative to open-heart surgery, particularly for high-risk patients. It involves inserting a new valve through the leg artery, eliminating the need for incisions or general anesthesia, and allowing for quicker recovery times.
The patient, a 70-year-old man suffering from severe breathlessness due to a narrowed aortic valve, was deemed too frail for traditional surgery due to his chronic lung condition. After a thorough evaluation, the medical team opted for TAVI, which was successfully performed with the help of a multidisciplinary team, including cardiologists, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nursing staff.
Prof. (Dr.) Ajai Singh expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing AIIMS Bhopal’s commitment to offering advanced, affordable healthcare. This success positions AIIMS Bhopal as a leader in cardiac care, providing life-saving treatments to underserved communities.
