Atrocities against women matter of grave concern for society: PM Modi

New Delhi, Aug 31 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday called for speedy justice in cases of crime against women and said atrocities against women are a matter of grave concern for the society.

“There are several laws in the country that address the issue of women’s safety. In 2019, the law for fast-track special courts was passed, under which witness deposition centers were created. We must ensure these centers are further strengthened so that faster verdicts are delivered in cases involving women’s safety,” Modi said.

The PM’s remarks came amid outrage over the rape and murder of a woman doctor at R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Addressing the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary, organized by the Supreme Court of India, at Bharat Mandapam here, he said, “To eliminate delay in justice, work has been done at many levels in the last decade. In the last 10 years, the country has spent about Rs 8,000 crore for the development of judicial infrastructure.”

“75 percent of the amount spent on judicial infrastructure in the last 25 years has been spent in the last 10 years only” he added.

Modi said, “The people of India have never distrusted the judiciary. …adding 75 years of the Supreme Court, as the ‘mother of democracy’, further enhance the India’s pride”.

Highlighting the role of the judiciary in the democracy, he said the judiciary is considered the protector of the Constitution and this is a huge responsibility in itself.

“We can say with satisfaction that the Supreme Court has made an excellent effort to fulfill this responsibility”, the PM added.

During the event, Modi also unveiled the stamp and coin commemorating 75 years of the establishment of the Supreme Court of India.

The event, attended by participants from the district judiciary across the country, celebrates a significant milestone in India’s judicial history and highlights the Supreme Court’s vital role in upholding justice and the rule of law.
