Perth, Nov 10 (UNI) Australia has sprung a late surprise by naming two uncapped players in their 13-member squad for the opening Test match against India in the ICC World Test Championship.
The clash, set to commence on 22 November at Perth Stadium, promises a high-stakes battle as both teams currently top the World Test Championship standings.
The Australian selectors have chosen young batsman Nathan McSweeney to fill the vacant opener’s role, marking a significant step in his budding career.
McSweeney, whose standout innings of 156 for Australia A against India A impressed fans and selectors alike, has received praise from former captain Ricky Ponting, who endorsed him on The ICC Review.
The promising right-hander is likely to partner with left-hander Usman Khawaja at the top of the order.
Another notable inclusion is white-ball specialist Josh Inglis, who makes his Test squad debut following impressive performances in the Sheffield Shield. Inglis’ inclusion adds depth to the Australian middle-order, already strengthened by the return of Steve Smith to the No.4 spot, alongside regulars Marnus Labuschagne, Travis Head, and Mitchell Marsh.
In the bowling department, the squad sees no surprises, with experienced pacers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood forming the backbone, supported by the dependable Scott Boland.
Veteran spinner Nathan Lyon rounds out the attack, bringing his extensive experience to Australia’s spin arsenal.
Selection chair George Bailey expressed confidence in the squad, highlighting McSweeney’s and Inglis’ readiness for the Test arena. “Nathan has shown consistent performances in domestic cricket, and Josh’s form in the Sheffield Shield has been outstanding,” Bailey commented. “This balanced squad gives us the flexibility we need for what promises to be an engaging series.”
With both teams vying for supremacy in the World Test Championship, this series is poised to be a thrilling showcase of Test cricket.
