Bangladesh Army sacks top general, reassigns duties of others after Hasina’s exit

Dhaka, Aug 6 (UNI) The Bangladesh Army on Tuesday effected a major reshuffle in its top posts, by sacking Major General Ziaul Ahsan, a decorated officer popularly known as Major Zia, and reassigning the duties of some other officers – a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country amid a massive uprising.

According to an ISPR press statement, Major Zia, a two-Star rank Bangladesh Army officer, who was the director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), has been relieved from service.

He will be replaced as NTMC director general by Major General ASM Ridwanur Rahman.

Among others, Lieutenant General Md Saiful Alam has been assigned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Lt Gen Md Mojibur Rahman has been appointed as as GOC Army Training and Doctrine Command; Lt Gen Ahmad Tabrez Shams Chowdhury as Quartermaster General of Army; Lt Gen Mizanur Rahman Shamim as Chief of General Staff of Army; Lt Gen Mohammad Shahinul Haque as Commandant NDC.

In September 2022, Major General Ziaul Ahsan had been appointed director general of National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC).

He was the first director general of the NTMC, a national-level intelligence agency of Bangladesh responsible for monitoring, collecting, and recording information and communication data. He was earlier also the first director of NTMC.

The NTMC is responsible for the interception of electronic communication such as phone calls, emails, and social media accounts.

In 2022 July, Ahsan was promoted to the rank of major general from brigadier general.

He is widely known for his work in the Rapid Action Battalion in various capacities.

While serving as the additional director general of the RAB, he was transferred to the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence and later he was attached to National Security Intelligence (NSI) as the director (internal affairs).

Ahsan joined the Bangladesh Army as a commissioned officer on 21 June 1991.

He was awarded the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) in 2010 and President Police Medal (PPM) in 2011.
