Bhopal receives first winter rains of season

Mercury dips across state, light to moderate showers may continue

Bhopal: Bhopal woke up to a rainy morning on Monday. Light rainfall was registered during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday with cloudy and drizzly conditions continuing into the morning. Light showers occurred intermittently during the day with day temperature dipping and people forced to wear woolens.

The meteorological office forecasts the likelihood of light to moderate and heavy rainfall in various parts of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday.

Widespread rainfall across state

Explaining the weather dynamics, Ashfaq Hussain, meteorologist from IMD Bhopal, noted, “A Western Disturbance has been active since Sunday, accompanied by the formation of a cyclonic circulation in the central part of Northern Madhya Pradesh. Additionally, a trough line has developed, with moisture streaming in from the Arabian Sea. These factors contributed to widespread rainfall across the state, particularly in Western Madhya Pradesh. Many areas experienced heavy rainfall, with Alirajpur, Barwani, Jhabua, and Khargone districts reporting significant precipitation.”

Highlighting specific rainfall figures, Hussain mentioned that Khargone recorded 84mm, Indore 50.1mm, Ratlam 47.0mm, Khandwa 45mm, Ujjain 31.0mm, Narmadapuram 10.2mm, Betul 8.2mm, Bhopal 6.0mm, and Pachmarhi 2.4mm.

While Bhopal witnessed a rise in night temperature, Indore experienced a decline to 14.6 degrees Celsius, marking a drop of 4.0 degrees.

Rains influenced by two weather systems

Looking ahead, the meteorological forecast indicates that the rains are influenced by two weather systems—an extended trough from North Pakistan to the Northeast Arabian Sea, crossing west Rajasthan and Gujarat, and another trough stretching from the Southeast Arabian Sea to the North Maharashtra coast. The combined impact of these systems is expected to result in substantial showers over many parts of North Maharashtra and Southwest Madhya Pradesh.

Moreover, the IMD anticipates another Western Disturbance on November 30, potentially bringing northern winds and the prospect of lower temperatures. This could further elevate the cold conditions in the state.
