Big boost to skill initiatives: GGSIPU VC

New Delhi, July 23 (UNI) Welcoming the Union Budget, Padma Shri Prof Mahesh Verma, Vice Chancellor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), highlighted that the allocation of Rs 1.48 lakh crore towards education, employment, and skilling will empower the rural and middle class to envision a better future.

“This will go a long way in developing our youth for a better career, and help the nation witness an ‘Amrit Kaal’ much earlier,” he stated.

Prof Verma emphasized that the increased budget for education will significantly support the university’s efforts to develop skills among the youth alongside their higher studies.

“Skill building and hands-on experience have been our forte, and the government’s decision is a booster to our initiatives, having introduced several skill courses this year,” he added.

The newly-announced centrally-sponsored scheme aims to skill 20 lakh youth over five years, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ concept. “It will help in developing our manpower in a skillful manner, which would be competent globally,” Prof Verma noted.

He also highlighted the revision of the model skilling loan scheme, which now facilitates loans up to Rs 7.5 lakh, enabling several underprivileged youths to pursue higher studies. Additionally, government aid of financial support for loans up to ₹10 lakh for higher education in domestic institutions will benefit many needy students.

“The upgradation of 1,000 ITIs over a period of five years on the hub-and-spoke model will boost the skilling efforts,” Prof Verma said. He further mentioned that the PM’s Internship programme complements the university’s internship programme, which engages students by providing them with a minimal stipend.
