BJP demands FIR against Rahul for violation of MCC during Maha election campaign

New Delhi, Nov 11 (UNI) The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday demanded the Election Commission to register an FIR against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over spreading “misinformation” during the campaigning for Maharashtra assembly election and violating the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

A BJP delegation led by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal along with senior party leaders met the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar in New Delhi and submitted a written complaint accusing him of violating the “Model Code of Conduct” during campaigning for next week’s Maharashtra Assembly election.

The party has called for the EC to “reprimand, censure, and restrain” Gandhi for spreading false claims.

Meghwal told media outside the ECI office that, “We told them that the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi spoke lies in Maharashtra, claiming that the BJP wants to crush the Constitution.”

“Rahul Gandhi waved the Constitution and lied again that the BJP is about to destroy it. This is false. We told the EC that this should be stopped. We also told the panel that the Rae Bareli MP is habitual of doing this, not deterring from it, despite warnings and notices.

We said that an FIR should be lodged against Rahul Gandhi under Sec 353 of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita ,” the Minister added.

The BJP alleged that “unverified claims” made by the former Congress President in his speech, specifically alleging that “Apple’s iPhones and Boeing’s aeroplanes were being manufactured in other states at Maharashtra’s expense are unfortunate.

Meanwhile, the ruling party also rejected these statements, noting that Maharashtra had in fact led the country in foreign direct investment (FDI), receiving Rs 70,795 crore between April and June in the fiscal 2024-25.
