- List prepared on the basis of National List of Essential Medicines 2022
Bhopal: Bhopal Memorial Hospital and Research Centre (BMHRC) has unveiled a new Essential Medicines List (EML), a significant step towards improved patient care and rational drug use. Aligned with the 2022 National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM), the EML prioritizes safe and effective medication availability for all patients.
Dr. Manisha Shrivastava, Director-in-charge of BMHRC, highlighted the collaborative process behind the EML’s development. Department heads provided crucial input, leading to the removal of some medications, the addition of others, and dosage adjustments. The hospital’s Standard Drug Procurement Advisory Committee (SDPAC), comprising experts from various medical institutions, rigorously reviewed and approved the final list. Dr. Shrivastava explained that the previous list contained redundancies, with multiple medications for the same condition. The NLEM served as a guide for selecting appropriate drugs, and the EML remains adaptable, allowing for future additions as needed.
The EML offers several key advantages: enhanced patient safety through scientifically selected medications, reducing adverse drug reactions; improved treatment efficacy with access to newer, more effective drugs and varied dosages; consistent treatment protocols across all departments, ensuring quality care; and reduced hospital medication costs by eliminating non-essential drugs. Furthermore, the EML aligns with national health policies, guaranteeing timely access to necessary medications. BMHRC’s commitment to high-quality healthcare is reinforced by this initiative, promising better treatment outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.
