New York, Sept 1 (UNI) Eighth seed Rohan Bopanna (India) and Aldila Sutjiadi (Indonesia) staged a fine rally to silence the spirited challenge of Katrina Siniakova of Czech Republic and John Peers of Australia 0-6, 7-6 (7-5)10-7 in 73 minutes in the mixed doubles of the US Open here.
Bopanna/Aldila meekly surrendered the opening set without opening their account. However, they reorganized their game and fought back to level one-set all in tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5). Bopanna/Aldila maintained their pressure and won the third set by 10-7 and the match on Saturday night.
American Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury of UK moved into men’s doubles third round at the expense of L Glasspool and Rinki Hijikata of Australia(,6-3, 7-6 (13-11).
On Friday, Rohan Bopanna advanced into the next round of men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Seeded second Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden took just one hour to dispose of the challenge of R. Carballes Baena (Spain)/ Foria Coria (Arg) 6-2 6-2.
Yuki Bhambri of India, pairing with A Olivetti (France) rallied to overcome A Krajicek (USA)/Jean-Julien Rojer (Netherlands) 4-6, 6-3 7-5 in the men’s doubles second round by 4-6 6-3 7-5 in 125 minutes on courts No. 7.
Eighth seeds Rohan Bopanna (Ind)/A. Sutjiadi (INA)registered a hard-fought first round win in mixed doubles at Court No. 6. Duration of the match was one hour and 38 minutes as both sets were decided in tie-breakers 7-6 (9-7) 7-6 (7-5).
N. Balaji of India made his exit by losing in the men’s doubles round second. Partnering G. Andreozzi (Arg), Balaji and partner lost to N. Skupski (Ger)/M. Venus (NZL) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.
Fireworks were witnessed at the Arthur Ashe Stadium as in an all-American men’s third round encounter, down by a set Frances Tiafoe traded stroke for stroke to carve out a well-merited marathon five-set verdict 4-6 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-4, 6-3 in four hour and three minutes.
Tiafoe won 73 percent of his net points compared to Ben Shelton’s 68 percent.
