- A Milestone for Wildlife Conservation
Bhopal – A thrilling development has unfolded in Kuno National Park, Sheopur, as 5 cheetahs were released into the open forest to accelerate their return to the wild. Among them is the female cheetah, Gamini, who arrived in India from South Africa as part of the Cheetah Reintroduction Project in February 2022. Along with Gamini, her four cubs—two males and two females—were also set free. This move, approved by the Cheetah Steering Committee, marks a significant milestone in the project, which aims to restore the cheetah population in India.
With this release, the park now boasts 17 cheetahs roaming freely across the open forest, including 11 cubs, with 9 cheetahs (including 3 cubs) still housed in the large enclosure. In total, Kuno National Park is now home to 26 cheetahs, all in excellent health. The release of these majestic creatures is part of a broader effort to ensure their successful reintegration into the wild, enhancing the park’s biodiversity.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav highlighted that the reintroduction of cheetahs not only serves as a national achievement but is also a momentous occasion for the entire Asian continent. He stressed that the success of this project in Kuno not only contributes to wildlife conservation but also boosts tourism, creates employment, and strengthens the economy of the Chambal region.
With cheetah numbers steadily increasing, the region is poised for a new wave of eco-tourism, attracting tourists and wildlife enthusiasts alike, and providing an economic uplift to local communities.
Additionally, CM Yadav released the book Toppers’ Diary Jeet Ke Raaj by Dr. Kanika Sharma, aimed at guiding students on building confidence and achieving academic success.
