Cold wave grips state: Fog and rain add to woes

Bhopal: Bhopal and several districts of Madhya Pradesh are reeling under severe cold wave conditions, with residents resorting to bonfires to combat the freezing temperatures. The chilly weather has been exacerbated by persistent fog and rain, making life increasingly difficult for people in Shivpuri, Dewas, and other affected areas.

In Shivpuri district, rainfall since Saturday night has intensified the cold. Narwar recorded the highest rainfall at 13 mm, followed by 12 mm in Shivpuri, 3.5 mm in Karaira, and 2.6 mm in Kolaras. The weather’s impact was evident on Sunday as the maximum temperature dropped by 4 degrees Celsius, with the nighttime minimum reaching 8 degrees. By Monday morning, a combination of fog and dew added to the chilling conditions, leaving people battling a bone-penetrating cold.

Dense fog reduces visibility

In Dewas district, dense fog has reduced visibility to just 20 meters over the past two days, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. On Monday, the maximum temperature in the district dipped by 2 degrees to 21 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stood at 9 degrees, a 1-degree drop from the previous day.

The harsh weather has already caused multiple accidents. On Amolpatha Road in Shivpuri, a Bolero overturned due to poor visibility, though fortunately, the passengers escaped with minor injuries.

Residents across the state are struggling with what they describe as a “double trouble” of cold and fog, which has disrupted daily life. Many are forced to gather around bonfires for warmth as the mercury continues to plummet.

Cold wave to persist

Meteorologists predict that the current cold wave, combined with intermittent rainfall and fog, is likely to persist for the next few days, urging people to remain cautious, especially while traveling under reduced visibility.
