- Kolkata’s Dolls Theatre by SPIC MACAY
Bhopal: The auditorium of Samanvay Bhavan was filled with the excitement and curiosity of children today. The occasion was a puppet show by Kolkata’s renowned Dolls Theatre, organized by Ankur Higher Secondary School in collaboration with SPIC MACAY. This event offered students and teachers a unique experience of wonder, fascination, and the magic of silent storytelling.
The Kolkata-based Dolls Theatre, recognized globally for its artistry, brought an eight-member team to present their show “Taming of the Wild.” This performance portrayed the delicate relationship between nature and humanity, delivering a powerful message: if balance is not maintained between humans and nature, it could threaten our very existence.
A generation accustomed to watching reels on their mobile phones was mesmerized in the darkened auditorium by enchanting visuals. From oceans, fishes, and plants to birds, tractors, and swans, the puppets came alive on stage, leaving the children awestruck. Despite the absence of dialogue, the masterful use of precise lighting and a harmonious blend of Indian and Western music brought the silent puppets’ stories vividly to life.
Team interacted with children
After the performance, director Sudip Gupta and his team interacted with the children, answering their questions. They explained the coordination, movement, and the role of each team member in operating the puppets. Gupta emphasized that the absence of dialogue allowed the performance to transcend language barriers, making it universally comprehensible.
Sudip Gupta shared his belief that puppetry is far from a dying art. It has been an integral part of India’s rich traditions and is easy for children to learn. He highlighted that puppetry enhances children’s creative thinking, storytelling abilities, emotional balance, and communication skills.
The event was attended by over 1,200 students and teachers from Ankur and Seven Hills Schools, along with SPIC MACAY officials. This program proved to be an inspiring blend of entertainment and education for the young audience.
