Bhubaneswar, Dec 20 (UNI) A depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger light to moderate rainfall in several parts of Odisha over the next two days, according to sources from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD reported that a well-marked low-pressure area over the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal remains stationary in the same region as of Friday.
This system is likely to continue moving northwards and intensify into a depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal within the next 12 hours. Subsequently, it is expected to move north-northeastwards while maintaining its intensity over the following 24 hours.
On Friday, light to moderate rainfall was recorded in isolated areas across Odisha. Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur in many districts of Coastal Odisha and at a few places in Interior Odisha over the next two days.
According to meteorological sources, heavy rainfall is very likely at isolated locations in the districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendrapara, and Jagatsinghpur.
Squally weather, with surface wind speeds reaching 40–50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph, is expected to prevail over parts of the west-central Bay of Bengal, as well as along and off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh and South Odisha.
Meanwhile, shallow fog was reported in isolated areas of Sundargarh and Kalahandi districts in Interior Odisha.
The IMD also noted a marked rise in minimum temperatures in some areas of South Interior Odisha, with an appreciable rise in a few other parts of Interior Odisha. Elsewhere, there was no significant change.
Minimum temperatures were markedly above normal in a few areas across Odisha, appreciably above normal in many parts of Coastal Odisha, and slightly above normal in some Interior Odisha districts.
The highest maximum temperature of 30.1°C was recorded in Malkangiri, while the lowest minimum temperature of 10.6°C was observed in Sundargarh.
No significant change in minimum temperatures (night temperatures) is expected over the next three days, although a drop of 2–4°C is likely thereafter across Odisha.
Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea along and off the coasts of North Andhra Pradesh, South Odisha, and the west-central Bay of Bengal on December 21.
