Docs to be assigned unique identification number

Bhopal: Soon, doctors nationwide will be assigned a unique identification number on the National Medical Register, expected to be implemented by the end of the coming year. The Ethics and Medical Registration Board, operating under the country’s top medical regulatory body, envisions this register as a dynamic platform. Here, doctors can continually update information on their qualifications, fellowships, and additional courses.

This centralized repository aims to facilitate easy verification of a doctor’s credentials, providing the public with access to accurate and up-to-date information. The assessment system has undergone a pilot phase in eight institutions across the country, comprising both private and government-run colleges. The National Medical Commission (NMC) is presently engaged in consultations with assessors and other stakeholders to finalize the implementation process.

The forthcoming unique identification number will function like a bank account, serving as a comprehensive storage unit for all relevant information about doctors. Access to this data will be regulated at different levels, tailored to the requirements of various stakeholders, including boards under the NMC, institutions employing doctors, medical colleges, and the general public.
