ECI slaps three-year ban on 5 contestants in 2022 Punjab Assembly polls

Chandigarh, Oct 16 (UNI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred five candidates, who contested the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, from contesting any further polls for three years as they failed to submit their election expenses within the specified time.

Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C stated that these candidates have not submitted their election expenses as per section 78 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 to the commission within the specified timeframe, thus rendering them ineligible to contest elections for the next 3 years under Section 10 A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Three of the candidates are from Sangrur district while 1 candidate each from Mansa and Faridkot districts have also been disqualified by an order issued by the ECI.

Shakti Kumar Gupta and Jaswinder Singh, who contested from Dhuri Assembly constituency, and Sanmukh Singh Mokha, who fought from Sunam Assembly constituency, have been disqualified.

Similarly, Gurucharan Singh Sangha, who was in fray from Faridkot Assembly seat, and Harbhagwan Sharma Bikhi, a candidate from Sunam assembly seat, have also been disqualified for the next three years by the ECI.
