Fire engulfs shipyard in Germany’s North, 300 firefighters battling blaze

Germany, July 3 (UNI) Around 300 firefighters have been battling a blaze that engulfed a Lurssen shipyard in the northernmost German state of Schleswig-Holstein since Tuesday morning, German broadcaster NDR has reported.

Firefighters have contained the fire and prevented it from spreading to other buildings, the broadcaster cited a local fire department spokesperson as saying on Tuesday.

The local police said one person suffered minor injuries and smoke poisoning in the incident. Some 30 residents in neighboring areas of the Schacht-Audorf municipality had to be evacuated due to smoke.

The fire also engulfed a yacht that was inside the burning part of the shipyard. The building’s roof and part of the facade collapsed, and several explosions were heard. The firefighting operation is expected to last until Wednesday morning.
