Yaounde, Aug 30 (UNI) At least 145 people have been killed and nearly 1 million more affected as rainstorms and flash floods hit major parts of Chad since June, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
All the 23 provinces of the country have been affected, the OCHA said Wednesday in its latest update on the flooding in Chad.
“More than 964,000 people or 166,000 households are affected by these floods as of Aug. 25, 2024. There are 145 people dead, more than 251,000 hectares of fields submerged, more than 70,000 houses destroyed, and 29,000 head of cattle swept away,” read the statement.
The country’s southwest region is facing the brunt of the floods, with more than 560,000 people affected.
Chadian authorities, UN agencies, and humanitarian partners are distributing emergency aid, but high waters are hampering delivery, the statement said.
“The UN and partners need an estimated 64 million U.S. dollars in funding to help people affected by the floods. So far, donors have contributed only about 10 percent of this amount,” the OCHA said.
