HC orders CBI probe into areca nut smuggling in Mizoram

Aizawl, July 19 (UNI) The Gauhati High Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to inquire into the alleged smuggling of dry areca nuts from Myanmar into India through Champhai district in eastern Mizoram, a lawyer said on Friday.

A bench comprising Justice Michael Zothankhuma and Justice Marly Vankung passed the order on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by activist Vanramchhuangi, more popularly known as ‘Ruatfela Nu’.

The petitioner had alleged use of fake/forged e-way bills/ G.S.T certificates in smuggling.

The High Court, in an order issued on Tuesday, said, “This direction (for CBI probe) has been passed due to the stand taken by the State Police that they are unable to investigate the said matter thoroughly as it involves international smuggling, originating from Myanmar.”

“Further, the offence pertains to commercial transactions for which a fair and impartial inquiry amongst others, can be achieved only by an investigation undertaken by the CBI.

Accordingly, the CBI shall investigate the matter and register a case, if necessary, and take it to its logical conclusion,” the Court said.

The issue of smuggling of areca nuts has been an ongoing hot topic in the state, with allegations being made of high ranking authorities being involved.
