Hukum house furnished under construction workshop

Bhopal: In Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, the traditional house of Mishing tribe residing in Dhemaji area of Majuli district of Assam state has been renovated by the artists from Dhemaji under the construction workshop. Assistant Keeper Shri Kant Gupta told that Mishing is basically a hill tribe which belongs to Tibetan Burman family of Mongoloid group. They live in the plains of North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Sibsagar and Darang districts of Assam and East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Mishing house is built in an area of approximately 28×15 square feet.

The head of the artists, Mr. Prafulla Barua, told that their houses are built on platforms prepared about 4-5 feet above the ground and a 4×6 nikining (balcony) is made in front of the house. This house mainly has four parts:- 1. Ejomijing:- These are symbolically divided houses which are used for the elders of the house to sleep. 2. Yamemijing:- These are symbolically divided houses which are used for the youth of the house to sleep. 3. Naikining: Here utensils are washed and other things are used. Also, in the middle of this house, a stove (Soka, Kiro) has been made for cooking, which is called Maram in the Mishing language. In the upper part of Soka, about 3-4 feet, a place is made for storing food items. Above this, a roof is also made.
